Program Garage Door Opener Remotes

Easily Program Garage Door Opener Remotes

Nowadays programming, clearing or reprogramming your garage door opener remotes is as easy as 1, 2, 3. If you’ve got the correct remote, that is. We’ll also give you some pointers on programming some older model garage door openers.

Remote Compatability

We will not be discussing any “universal” remotes in this article. Please refer to the instructions included with your remote, when you purchased it, for programming instructions.

If you have a Liftmaster, Chamberlain or Sears garage door opener; please reference the following table for remote compatibility: http://liftmaster.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/209/~/liftmaster-remote-compatibility

If you have a Genie garage door opener with Intellicode or Intellicode 2 technology; any Intellicode 2 remotes should work with either system. Intellicode remotes, however, WILL NOT work with Intellicode 2 tecnhology.

If you have an older garage door opener w/ dip switch technology: locate the dip switches on or in your opener (or external reciever). Removing the battery cover will give you access to the remote dip switches.

Liftmaster Remote Programming

LiftMaster Learn Button

  1. Locate learn button on opener motor housing, usually in the rear (but sometimes on side of unit and/or under light cover). This button will be yellow, green, red or purple. Press and release this button. Do NOT hold it.
  2. Press the remote button that you’d like to operate this door opener. (Note: Multiple openers can be programmed to operate simultaneously with the same button. If this is done accidentally, however, one opener must be cleared of memory and ALL remotes/keypads for that unit must be reprogrammed.)
  3. Opener light will blink. This confirms that the remote has been programmed
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 with all remotes.

Resetting the opener erases all previously programmed remotes and keypads. You may want to exercise this option if, say, you have a tenant walk away with your remote. To reset the opener simply press the learn button and hold it for approximately 10 seconds. Then follow steps 1-3 to reprogram all of your remotes and keypads.

Genie Remote Programming

Genie Learn Button

  1. Locate learn button on opener motor housing. You’re looking for a small, round, black button with an LED next to it. This is located under the light cover in many Genie models. Press and release this button. Do NOT hold it.
  2. Press the remote button that you’d like to operate this door opener. Press it AGAIN. You must press the button TWICE.
  3. Press the remote one more time and the door should run, confirming that the remote is programmed.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 with all remotes.

When reprogramming genie keypads, the keypad must be reset. Please call genie customer service if you’d like to perform this task yourself.

Programming Remotes With DIP Switches

dip switch

  1. If reference numbers are given on both sets of DIP switches, set corresponding switches to like up/down or on/off positions.
  2. If that doesn’t work, reverse up to down or on to off.
  3. If that doesn’t work, reverse numbered switch positions on remote 1 to 10, 2 to 9, 3 to 8, etc.
  4. Try reversing on/off or up/down again.
  5. Consider an external receiver with learn button technology or buy a new opener. Honestly, DIP switches are probably the weakest link in your home’s security system… it’s time to get a new opener!
